The mountain ash forest was quite unlike anything I've seen.  It's filled with small trunked trees, with a knee high understory of ferns and other plants.  The trees aren't dense at all, so it's very bright underneath--and messy.  These trees drop quite a lot of branches, we stopped several times to clear branches fallen in the road or sticking out or hanging down.
